PSS (Peer Support Specialist) Program
A peer support specialist works as a team member to address feelings of stigma, social isolation, personal loss and other mental health barriers by modeling wellness and demonstrating personal responsibility, self-advocacy and hopefulness throughout the recovery journey.
By sharing perspectives of their lived mental health experiences, a peer support specialist builds a relationship and focuses on the strengths and potential of each person along the path of recovery.
PSS services can be provided wherever life happens—in the home, in the community or at our office. Services are a Medicaid billable. Our PSS team members are State Certified Peer Specialists.

Introducing Our Peer Of The Year…. Henry, who we call Mac, has been a true inspiration to the peers we serve on a daily basis. He role models recovery from a dual diagnosis perspective in a way that makes others want to reach for recovery. Mac helps people impacted by mental illness find their strengths through volunteering and building. Mac is in charge of our woodshop at Kiesler and helps our peers find new innovative ways to practice coping skills and increase self-esteem through a hands on experience of building things and discovering strengths. Mac is also a wonderful support for our peer support team and is always there for a helping hand or an ear to listen when one of us are struggling. He runs a group called Friday night lights to provide support to individuals also impacted by dual diagnosis as well as a weekly boating trip around a local lake to increase socailization and leisure activities. He also advocates for our peers and helped transform our organization into a recovery focused organization through the development and implementation of the peer support team into Northland Counseling Center, our parent organization. Because of his efforts, our peer support team are seen as equals to everyone else on the team and highly respected in our community. This helps to reduce stigma and increase awareness on mental health in our community.
Peer of the Year is a prestigious award given to 1 Peer Support Specialist in Minnesota who has been nominated for blazing paths in the mental health field. Congrats Mac on your nomination and award!!!
